HAYWARD — Volunteers spent 2005 learning about San Lorenzo Creek and then working to stabilize its banks and stave off erosion.
The new year will be barely two weeks old on Jan. 14 when a new creek restoration project will be under way.
The Alameda County Public Works Agency is seeking volunteers to work on the creek between Foothill Boulevard and Second Street from 10 a.m. to noon that day.
Paul Modrell, a county environmental specialist, said work will include weeding and litter removal; planting trees, shrubs, vines and grasses; and staking live willow, alder, dogwood and cottonwood cuttings.
Fair weather is key for the cleanup and planting. Modrell said the event will be postponed if rain or a chance of rain is forecast for that day.
First-time volunteers need to read a volunteer program manual and bring a signed copy of the volunteer application form for the project. Minors must be accompanied by adults.
For further information, call Paul Modrell at (510) 670-5248.
