WHERE WE LIVE Miller gives a shovelful of support
Rain showers didn't keep Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, from visiting Crockett on Tuesday to look at the creek restoration project undertaken by the water and environment class at John Swett High School. Miller did more than observe, though. He picked up a shovel and helped to plant a coast live oak tree near the project. With a three-year grant from the California Coastal Conservancy and the California Environmental Protection Agency, students have been removing exotic plants from the area around the creek and replacing them with native plants. Future plans for the creek-restoration project include the installation of a butterfly garden, paths and picnic tables. Much of the work is being done under the direction of Sandra Dare from the Carquinez Regional Environmental Education Center. http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/living/science/13546005.htm 2006 ContraCostaTimes.com and wire service sources.
