EL CERRITO - The Friends of Baxter Creek recently held a volunteer event at a site near Conlon and San Pablo avenues, where El Cerrito resident Ken Ong dug up weeds and helped prepare the area for its transformation into a park.
The formerly neglected property will soon include a restored creek, a paved extension of the Ohlone Greenway trail and gathering areas. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the spring.
Volunteers are needed to maintain the restored habitat in and around the creek. Native plants, insects, birds and other animals will soon be making their homes in the park, according to Baxter Creek group coordinator Maryann Aberg, and it needs to be a hospitable place for them to live.
The Baxter Creek group will hold additional "work parties" at the site the first Saturday of every month, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For information, call Apple Szostak at 510-665-3686.
The project is being funded by the Water Resources Control Board, the Coastal Conservancy and El Cerrito.
