BERKELEY — The Coastal Conservancy has agreed to fund $2 million in improvements at Berkeley's Aquatic Park, the city announced this week.
The money will be used for the planning, construction and design of the hydrology improvements, signs and environmental education, the removal of invasive species and the planting of native species at the south end of the park.
The conservancy has agreed to fund the improvements pending the approval by the Wildlife Conservation Board and the Coastal Conservancy's governing board, according to a letter to Berkeley's Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Director Marc Seleznow.
The Wildlife Conservation Board must approve the money because funds for the park improvements are coming from funds for San Francisco Bay wetland restoration.
The city applied for the grant nearly two years ago at the direction of the City Council. The improvements will be part of a larger plan called the Aquatic Park Improvement Plan.
