SACRAMENTO
- The Delta Protection Commission has named Linda Fiack as its new executive director, replacing Margit Aramburu, who is retiring.

Fiack, 54, is currently a Yolo County deputy director of planning and public works, in charge of parks and natural resources. She previously worked at the State Lands Commission for 29 years.

The commission announced Fiack's hiring Wednesday. She starts work on Aug. 1.

The commission is a state agency with regional planning powers in the California Delta's so-called "primary zone," the 500,000-acre core of the West's largest estuary.

Based in Walnut Grove, its mission is to protect and enhance agriculture, recreation and wildlife habitat. Its 19 appointed board members oversee a five-county land-use plan adopted in 1995.

"I really feel right now they're in a transition, and there are a lot of things we can do to make the policies of the plan a reality," said Fiack, who lives with her husband, Jim Fiack, on 3 acres near Woodland.

Aramburu has led the commission since its creation 12 years ago. She successfully brought together farmers, environmentalists and recreation advocates to discuss the Delta's future, and her deep knowledge of the region is widely respected.
