If you've got a green thumb (or just like to be outside), the San Francisquito Watershed Council needs your help putting native plants along San Francisquito Creek from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 7 near Woodside Elementary School, 3195 Woodside Road, Woodside. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty; children are welcome as long as they're with an adult. Work gloves, snacks, tools and drinks are provided. Call (650) 962-9876, ext. 305. Prune U

The San Mateo Arboretum Society is holding two rose-pruning events next weekend. From 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 7, help prune Central Park's rose garden. Come to learn or to share your pruning expertise. Dress warmly and bring pruning shears and gloves. Heavy rain cancels.

January's Tea in the Park is a rose-pruning symposium with Norma and Jack Bennett. In this hands-on seminar, learn to prune a container rose. If you'd like to take a plant home, the cost is $10. Bring pruning shears and gloves. Call (650) 574-1677 for reservations; space is limited.

New ideas

The San Mateo Garden Center, 605 Parkside Way, holds a general meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 9. Ed Holm, an ornamental horticulturist and lecturer, will talk about garden ideas for 2006. The new Garden Center cookbook will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served, and guests are welcome. Call (650) 574-1506.
