  • General Position Description: Under the direction of the park manager, the Bird Program Specialist is responsible for sound scientific data collection and management of avian resources and visitor programs at the World Birding Center (WBC) - Resaca de la Palma State Park. Organizes and administers field studies and programs to increase public awareness of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and small mammals, to provide citizen-science opportunities for visitors and to promote bird habitat conservation in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Recruits, trains, evaluates, and retains staff, interns, volunteers, field scientists and institutional partners. Disseminates information to the general public and targeted audiences through news releases, programs and reports in scientific as well as popular publications (as appropriate) as well as through participation in ornithological and popular birding organizations. Provides training and technical guidance to the public and TPWD/WBC personnel concerning birds, bird conservation and habitat management for birds.   • Working Conditions:
    (1) Forty hour week includes flexible schedule, hours other than 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays;

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in wildlife management, wildlife conservation, conservation biology, zoology, ecology, natural resources or natural science with major coursework in ornithology, ecology, field botany or zoology. Preferred Education: Master of Science Degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience:
    NRS I - (1) No experience required;
    NRS II - (2) One year of experience related to the specific duties of the position;
    NRS III - (3) Two years of experience related to the specific duties of the position;
    NRS IV -(4) Six years of experience related to the specific duties of the position. Acceptable Substitutions: Relevant advanced degrees may be substituted for experience requirements:
    (1) Master's degree equals one year of experience, or;
    (2) Ph.D. degree equals two years of experience. Preferred Experience: A minimum of four years of bird related field experience.

SALMON PROTECTION AND WATERSHED NETWORK (SPAWN) is seeking to fill a new position working with endangered coho salmon and watershed conservation in the Lagunitas Watershed

SALMON PROTECTION AND WATERSHED NETWORK (SPAWN), located in west Marin County, CA, works to protect and restore the Lagunitas Creek watershed with the aim of returning salmonid populations and their habitat to historical levels through the actions of an educated and motivated citizenry. We are building a local and State-wide grassroots constituency to support and advocate for policies to protect the watershed which supports the largest population of native coho salmon left in California, and also supports other aquatic endangered species including steelhead and CA freshwater shrimp. The project is multi-faceted and uses hands-on conservation projects, grassroots organizing, public and media education, coalition building, and litigation, to accomplish its goals. SPAWN is a program under the fiscal sponsorship of Turtle Island Restoration Network.

Job Description Summary: We seek a highly motivated individual with organizing and biological background to coordinate SPAWN’s growing volunteer driven activities including:

Point Reyes National Seashore is seeking a wetland biologist to assist with field and office work for a wetland restoration project in Point Reyes Station in Marin County. This person would be an employee of the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, a non- profit organization that provides support for Point Reyes National Seashore.

This would be a full-time position starting in the spring of 2008 and running through December 2008, with a potential for extension into 2009 depending on funding. For current students planning to complete school in spring 2008, position could be part-time during spring 2008 until course work is completed and then move to full-time for the summer and fall 2008.

Save The Bay has been working since 1961 to Celebrate, Protect, and Restore the San Francisco Bay. We offer middle and high school students, teachers, and other Bay Area residents environmental education experiences in wetlands around the Bay and in their schools. These programs provide participants with an awareness of the Bay, a connection between their daily lives and local wetlands, and a sense of responsibility for the Bay through active stewardship.

Summary: Save The Bay’s Watershed Education Program seeks energetic part-time Field Educators to lead community-based restoration programs for middle and high school students, community and corporate groups, and Bay Area residents. Save The Bay connects students, teachers and the general public directly to the Bay, introduces them to the issues impacting San Francisco Bay, and empowers them to take action to save the Bay. Our Watershed Education Program includes 3 unique programs that are tailored for different ages:

  • Lead habitat restoration projects for these groups with a focus on non-native plant removal, native plant propagation and outplantings, shoreline clean-ups, and native oyster and eelgrass monitoring
  • Assist with project planning and communication between other field staff and project mangers

Education Specialist, Save the Bay

Summary: The Education Specialist is responsible for leading Save The Bay’s Canoes In Sloughs and Discover The Bay education programs and select Community-based Restoration programs. The Specialist serves as a mentor and support for part-time seasonal Field Educators modeling best practices in experiential, hands-on environmental education. The Education Specialist supports Save The Bay’s education team by developing and implementing staff training, conducting staff evaluations, and coordinating logistical needs. The Specialist also assists with curriculum development, research, and administrative tasks. The Education Specialist reports to the Education Director.

This is a great position for someone who is passionate about education, enjoys educating youth and adults outdoors while taking on a leadership role with other field educators, and is interested in supporting critical departmental functions for high-quality program implementation.

The Education Specialist is a full-time position with approximately 3 to 4 days per week in the field, and 1 to 2 days per week in the office. Schedule is Tuesday-Saturday with occasional exceptions.

Primary Responsibilities:

We are seeking a highly effective and organized team leader to serve asthe Executive Director of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association.

The Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association (FMSA) is a non-profit membership organization whose mission is to support and protect the resources of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. We have a Cooperating Agreement with a National Marine Sanctuary, which occupies over 1200 square miles of rich and diverse marine habitat off the northern California coast, and our mission includes running programs under contract with them. As examples, over 100 FMSA volunteers monitor

dozens of beaches as part of the Beach Watch program which provides valuable data for the Sanctuary; our education programs bring area youth to the coast, to explore and learn about the Sanctuary in a hands-on fashion; and a priority FY *09 program launch entails locating marine debris. All of these efforts provide critical teaching and outreach to the community, while in service to the Sanctuary.

The FMSA Executive Director is responsible for overseeing agreements with the Marine Sanctuary and developing a productive working relationship with the Sanctuary Superintendent, while being responsive to the FMSA Board of Trustees. The Executive Director will manage an operating budget of $700,000 and will direct a staff of 10. Leadership in non-profit fundraising is essential; grant-writing skills and financial reporting skills are paramount. Candidates should be able to adeptly communicate and liaison with major donors, foundations, members, and volunteers alike. A key role of the Executive Director is to represent FMSA to the public, to NGO allies and to our Marine Sanctuary partners. The Wild Wings Educator will be responsible for delivering energetic and engaging programs, including but not limited to presenting education programs at our facility and offsite, caring for raptors and vehicle while traveling, communicating with teachers, assisting with summer camp and special events, participating in training birds and presenting free-flight demonstrations, and promoting Carolina Raptor Center’s mission of environmental education and conservation. Regular extensive travel throughout North and South Carolina and a valid driver’s license are required. This position requires a flexible schedule, including some weekend work.

Experience should include a Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, natural sciences, biology, or a related field; experience working in an informal education setting is a plus. Must be able to lift 25 lbs and work outside in all weather conditions. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic person willing to become a dynamic public speaker, have a strong desire to work with birds of prey, and have the ability to work in both unsupervised conditions and team settings. Additionally, the successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and demonstrate commitment, flexibility, time management and organizational skills.

This position is grant-funded and runs from July 15, 2008, until June 30, 2009, with the potential for annual renewal.

An interest in education and interpretation, familiarity with birds, effective communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, ability to perform work in the outdoors under variable weather conditions on uneven terrain, and the use of a personal vehicle are essential, along with the ability to live cooperatively with fellow interns. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental education, the ability to identify western birds, and Spanish language skills. Program Manager, California Conservation Science, The Nature Conservancy

The Program Manager is responsible for programmatic and administrative oversight of the California Conservation Science program. S/he conducts science and planning research and fosters cross-cutting learning among an international conservation community through the writing, editing and dissemination of information, including reports, peer reviewed literature and other media. S/he works closely with the Director of Conservation Science on program strategy development and annual planning and budgeting, and is responsible for the management of program finances, coordination of program staff recruitment, hiring and other personnel transactions, management of contracts and private grants supporting a range of scientific projects, acts as liaison with IT staff on program needs, and ensures compliance with internal policies and procedures and external requirements. S/he works closely with science and planning staff in the development of conservation assessments, and assists with the development and dissemination of conservation science and planning protocols. S/he is responsible for design and implementation of the program communications strategy, including planning and coordination of statewide team meetings, science writing workshops, annual speaker series, program workshops and conferences, and dissemination and marketing of published reports and articles. Further, s/he is responsible for the production of communication and outreach materials to educate and inform conservation partners, scientific organizations, the academic community and the general public, including managing outside vendors to achieve project specific goals.
