| Event Description: |
The Elkhorn Slough Coastal Training Program is pleased to announce the
California Red-Legged Frog Workshop for 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., April 8, 2010
at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The
workshop will consist of classroom lectures complimented by an
afternoon field component. Intended audiences include: biological
consultants, land managers, researchers, and regulatory agency
personnel.
Workshop registration also includes attendance at one of two night time
field training sessions on the evenings of either April 7 or April 8.
More information on those field training sessions can be found on the
Coastal Training Program website.
Workshop Objectives: This is a great opportunity to receive training in
species identification, field sampling techniques, and the habitat
requirements of the California red-legged frog (CRLF). Workshop
information will be useful for conservation planning and for
educational outreach to agricultural producers and others who are
considering projects that may impact CRLF. It will also provide
foundational knowledge for monitoring projects where potential impacts
to CRLF have been identified.
Workshop Format: Morning Session (April 8th 8:00am-2:00pm) - Classroom: Overview of
biology and management of the California red-legged frog. Meet at the
Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Afternoon Session (April 8th 2:00pm-6:00pm) - Field Trip to areas on
the North Coast of Santa Cruz County: Habitat requirements, corridors,
pond designs, metapopulations dynamics, and survey techniques. Personal
vehicles required to travel to field sites.
Evening Field Practicum (either April 7 or April 8, 2010,
8:00pm-midnight) - Your registration includes attendance at one of the
two field training sessions on. In order to reduce teacher:student
ratio, we are limiting each session to 12 participants. After
pre-registering, please email us your preferred date of attendance;
include a note if you are not flexible in the date that you are able to
attend. We cannot guarantee you your preferred date, but we will do
what we can to accommodate your preference.
These sessions are at the Granite Rock Sand Quarry, just north of the
City of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. Instructors will demonstrate
capturing, handling, sexing, and measuring of adult frogs and PIT
tagging techniques.
Workshop Instructors: Norman Scott: Norman has academic interests in the biology, ecology,
biogeography, and evolution of reptiles and amphibians. He has
authored or coauthored more than 70 papers, mostly on tropical reptiles
and amphibians, but also monkey populations, duck taxonomy, and bird
faunas.
Galen Rathbun: Galen’s research interests include the behavioral
ecology of vertebrates, conservation biology of declining species, and
the application of innovative field techniques. His recent research
includes understanding the basic life history of California red-legged
frogs and Pacific pond turtles, the impacts of cattle grazing on a
community of small mammals in the San Joaquin Valley, and the evolution
of monogamy in elephant-shrews (sengis) and dassie rats in Namibia
(southwestern Africa).
Field Gear: Participants will need to bring specific field gear for the training,
including but not limited to field-ready clothing and footwear. Waders
or hip boots are required for surveying ponds, and waders are strongly
recommended. A headlamp or other strong, non-LED flashlight is
strongly recommended for the night survey. A complete list of required
and recommended equipment will be emailed to registered participants.
Registration Note: Please note, you can pre-register via this website, but your
registration will not be finalized until we receive a check for $375
payable to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, sent to: Elkhorn Slough
Foundation ATTN: Grey Hayes, 1700 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville, CA 95076.
Please note on your check the name of the workshop. Deadline for
