One of the most important, yet least-understood, bird-conservation instruments in this country is the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp.
Watefowl hunters in the U.S are required by law to buy this "Duck Stamp" each year. Birders photographers, or conservation-minded citizen, can simply buy a Stamp.
Created in the 1930s, the Stamp continues today as a vital source of funds for protecting wetland and grassland habitat, having generated more than $700 million and protected over 5.2 million acres of wetland and grassland habitat over the decades
Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar collected from the sale of these Stamps goes to the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and grasslands for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System. (About $25 million is collected through Stamp sales per year.)
A annual Stamp costing $15, available at most post offices, goes on sale starting the end of this week. Purchasing a Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp is easy and will give the holder the satisfaction of knowing that she or he is contributing directly to the protection of America's bird habitats.
